RS Games - August 2011
RS Games, August 2011
Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy
In a practise for the 2012 real Olympics, the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) is holding an all-fleet RS Championships in August 2011. It is set to be a bumper event with great racing and vibrant socials.
The full dates are 15th – 26th August 2011 – why not stick the dates in your diary and come along for the whole bash ….
For those who have not been sailing at the WPNSA, or not since the re-build, it is quite a different place. The combination of good winds and the range of sailing water from sheltered to open sea, with the lowest tidal range in the UK, is unique. A world class facility set in the centre of the Jurassic Coast.
The RS Olympics will consist of World, National or European Championship for all fleets within the RS Class Assocation, except the Fevas and K6s. The racing programme is finalised and is as follows –
RS100 Nationals - 16-19 August
RS200 Nationals – 22-26 August
RS300 Nationals – 23-26 August
RS400 Nationals – 18-21 August
RS500 Worlds and Nationals – 15-19 August
RS600 Nationals – 23-26 August
RS700 Europeans and Nationals – 19 – 23 August
RS800 Nationals – 15-19 August
RS Vareo Nationals – 20-22 August
It is anticipated that all fleets will sail 2 or 3 races/day (as requested by fleet). WPNSA will put on 3 courses throughout the Championships, and those fleets that prefer to sail in the Bay (rather than the Harbour) will do so on all or most days, weather permitting.
Large socials have been planned at the club include bands, DJs, karaoke, games nights with giant inflatable games …. On the other nights there will be quieter event at the Academy, or we will venture out into Weymouth or environs. All fleet committees will be involved in ensuring a fabulous programme, and we are currently seeking a sponsor for this pretigious event at the Olympic venue. If you have any contacts, let us know.
The entry fee will be approx. £25/boat/day for single-handers, and £30/boat/day for double-handers to include all race management and socials.
It is probably worth thinking about accommodation options soon. The club can accept yachts, campervans and caravans on site so you might think of a charter or a hire for the period. There are loads of campsite in Weymouth and Portland, but they all seem to be about 3 miles away. We are therefore trying to secure more local camping in a school or sports club. The club also has 45 beds at their hostel-type accommodation, the Boscawen, and the RYA has around 30 beds in Portland House. We have booked these for the whole period, and this will be available to book with your entry. For other accommodation details, there are lots of links at http://www.wpnsa.org.uk/accommodation/
Entry and further information will be available to all Assocation members in early 2011.
If you have any suggestions to help make this the best event event, contact Heather on heatherc@rs-association.com or 01590 610273.
