2ndhanddinghies RS200 SW Ugly Tour basks in glorious conditions at magical Exe SC

Continuing an amazing run the 2ndhanddinghies RS200 SW Ugly Tour returned to Exe SC again this year to yet again splendid conditions and cakes. The heat wave was still present but unlike the previous fortnight there was proper wind; a blessed relief as we had to sail out against the start of the incoming tide!! So out in the race area there was total blue sky, blue sea, a big yellow thing all day; sun cream everywhere and a E/SE gradient breeze that stayed around 8 -13 knots all day. Could it get better?

Well the racing was pretty damm fine as well. A quite high calibre fleet had a ball; as Harry Roome put it “this is why we keep our 200 for days and racing like that”. Right at the front there was quite a titanic battle between James Peters/Ali Young and Matt Mee/Emma Norris. Peters/Young sailed away with race 1 but were passed in race 2 by Mee/Norris who went on to win race 3 as well with Peters/Young having to pull through from 5th to 2nd. So all was set for a last race showdown under a black flag after some general recalls. Mee/Norris seemed to be in control until but were pulled out on the first run along with Claire Walsh/Darren McNamara; OCS. This left Nick and Oli Martindale with a good the lead at the first leeward gate with Peters/ Young second but by the end of the second lap these positions had been reversed and Peters/Young won the event on tie break from Mee/Norris. You had the feeling it could be that close at the forthcoming Noble Marine RS200 Nationals at Mounts Bay.

Behind these two the racing was also amazingly close. The old brigade of Harry/Prue Roome and Pete Vincent/very young Victoria Upton were also tied on points and 9th- 13 were also on the same points; Liz Teague/Shaun Spring won that fight with their third in the last race and also 1st silver division. Fellow Exe sailors Sam Jacklin/Josh Geare were 1st bronze division.

A very contented fleet compared sun tans over a truly splendid spread of cakes and sandwiches; Exe SC had done us proud again.
