It is run by volunteer sailors with back-up by part time professional administrators
The sailors make the plans and decisions - without having to do all the leg work

The cost is tiny compared to your benefits, working out at just £3.75 per month for Full Membership, £3 per month for Club Membership or £2.08 per month for Youth Membership
By taking out International Class Association membership for one class, you will have reciprocal membership to the RS100, RS200, RS300, RS400, RS600, RS700, RS800, RS Vareo International and International RS500 Class Associations

La Rochelle, on the west coast of France, hosted a fantastic week-long Eurocup event for the RS fleets. La Societe des Regates Rochelaises must be congratulated for doing a great job of looking after 144 boats and competitors so capably, helped by the friendliest beach master, a superb Race Officer/stand-up comedian. They didn�t even seem to mind the Racing Snakes comments about Paris/La Rochelle not getting the 2012 Olympics (well, not too much). Out of the 5 RS fleets, the RS200s had the highest entries, at 44. Despite often seeming windier in the boat park, the week was mainly hot sunshine and light winds. The fleet proved very competitive, with 6 different winners over the 10 race series. The practice race on Sunday was the windiest day of the week, with the wind shifting right throughout the day. This trend seemed to repeat itself during the week, but just as soon as you thought you�d got the conditions worked out, then the rules would change. It was definitely a week for heads out the boat, concentration and avoiding black flags. The lighter winds on day 1 meant bigger bounces off the dustbin lid size jelly fish in the bay. Current National Champions Lee Sydenham and Anne Vaudry and previous National Champions David Giles and Fiona Clark took a race win each. The trapezoid course was shortened slightly on day 2 so that we could actually see the windward mark. Ian Martin and Claire Booth had a great start and first beat leading race 4 for sometime, before eventually taking an excellent 4th in tricky conditions. Paul �Wizza� Dorer and Christina King stayed with Martin/Booth ending up 3rd. However, it was a day for the two Lucy Matthews, with Loopy Lucy and helm Geoff Carveth winning race 3, and James Stewart and Lucy Matthews winning race 4. Unlike the 400 fleet, who lost a drunk and disorderly competitor to the Gendarmerie cells overnight, there was a full fleet of 200s out on day 3. The forecast of a NE wind shifting to a Southerly in a matter of hours turned out to be accurate, with those going right on the first beat in both races ending up on top, before the RO shortened course after two laps. Giles/Clark led race 5 from Trudie Danbury and Rachel Jones. John Greenland and Pippa Williams held their cool in the dying breeze to win race 6. The first race on day 4 showed the fleet why the RO had 6 helpers at each end of the line and an extra supply of chalk. With a heavily port biased line and the tide taking us upwind 12 boats were black flagged in one start. Sydenham/Vaudry and Steve Dunn crewed by Noelle Vidal took advantage of the depleted fleet to take 1st and 2nd respectively. An only slightly shyer fleet, suffered a mere 2 black flags and this time is was Dunn/Vidal�s time to take line honours from Sydenham/Vaudry. With 3 boats tied in 4th place, and most discards already taken by black flags, the pressure was on for the last day. A long windless, rainy drift out didn�t bode well. But a decent breeze eventually kicked in from Ile de Ray. Giles/Clark recovered from two previous black flags to take two race wins, which pulled them up from 7th to 3rd overall. Dunn/Vidal added a 2nd and 6th to a very well sailed series, putting them in 2nd overall. However, it was Sydenham/Vaudry, who took the event win with incredibly consistent results over a closely fought series. The winners of the Silver league were Martyn and Clare Jones in 10th place overall, followed by Chris Catt/Mark Heather and Chris Darling/Helen Williams. The bronze league was won by Charles Muir and Paul Mander in 26th overall, followed by Wayne and Debbie Fletcher, and Jethro Gebhard/Carinna Perkin. Some lucky ones stayed on for a holiday in France, while the rest of us headed home wondering whether Micky and Howie�s borrowed, and overheating Ford Galaxy would get the double stack back to Essex, pick up a Lark and get them to Abersoch in time for the first race of the Lark Nationals on Sunday, before bottled water at French and UK service stations ran out!
